May 7-11, 2012 W.A.G.

Dear BCS,

With just 6 weeks left in the school year, we have been reminding our students, staff, and families to finish strong. I also want to take the time to remind our families to be careful when using the student drop off and pick up zones. Please remember that the circles are for drop off and pick up only. Parking should only take place in one of the parking lots. A good rule of thumb is that if you are there long enough to turn off your engine, then you should probably consider moving to a parking space.

Please also be careful to make sure that you are stopping in the cross walk for all students and adults crossing through the drive to head to and from school. We have had some students and staff nearly injured when trying to make that cross.

In addition, make sure that you are not waiting to pick up your student outside of the designated pick up and drop off zones. There have been some cars waiting outside of the drop off zones in the exit lane to Covington road and this has been creating a back up of cars and even some near accidents as people try to move around these cars to try to exit the circle. We have been advised by the police that they will be monitoring this area and ticketing those cars that are outside of the designated zones. Please be cognizant of these zones to avoid traffic, causing an accident, or possibly receiving a ticket.

Lets finish strong (even in our parking lots!).

Have a GEEKed Week,

Patricia

DRESS CODE REMINDER

As the weather gets warmer and shorts, skirts, and tank tops come out, please take a moment to review the dress code with your child (http://www.bcsonline.info/Documents/2011-2012StudentHandbookPlanner.pdf ) on page 9 of the student handbook. Please help your child to remember that shorts/skirts must be below the child’s fingertips and tank tops must have wide enough straps so that undergarments cannot be seen. If a student is not wearing the appropriate clothing to meet dress code, a call will be placed to a parent to have an appropriate item of clothing brought up for the student to change into. Thank you for helping!

Please have your child bring bag of candy to school either tomorrow, Monday 5/7 or Tuesday 5/8. The candy will be collected in the morning by 5/6 parent volunteers.

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE, MASS PRODUCTION PROJECT IS DONE!

As you probably know, for the Systems Unit Project in Engineering Technology, the 3rd-4th grade students design and mass produce a toy electric vehicle that is built on a model assembly line. During this project, all of the 3-4 Engineering Technology classes work together to design and then mass-produce over 230 electric motor powered model vehicles. Advantages and disadvantages of mass production and the use of systems are experienced in this manufacturing setting. This process relates to the Michigan History Social Studies Unit and the Systems Unit theme. The mass production allows for all students to take home a keepsake model that they have produced. This project is funded by our wonderful P.T.S.A.

A School Bus design was chosen as the model for this year’s vehicle. With the four homerooms that I had during the first semester, (Davis, Frishman, Maliszewski and Parkin) the kids drew various models of vehicles to submit ideas for the design that we would build. We looked at the previously built designs over the past years of BCS, and established our design parameters as a group, for example: maximum length, width, height, wheel diameter, motor and battery size. Often their designs reflected their various interests and they were encouraged to come up with meaningful themes. The most popular designs by far, were various types of buses, and a school bus was selected for our model this year.

After the design concept was selected, the first semester classes started the production by making the axles, cutting the body blocks and started drilling the axle holes. The second semester homerooms (Butzin, Harvath, Seley and Wallington) continued with the parts production, built the sub-assemblies and concluded with the final assembly this past week.

All of the 3-4 students will receive their vehicles in special presentation assemblies on Wednesday, May 9th and Thursday, May 10th. The schedule is as follows:

3/4 Eng. Tech. School Bus Project Presentation and Distribution

Wednesday, May 9th: Butzin and Frishman: 11:05 - 11:50

Harvath and Maliszewski: 12:55 - 1:40

Thursday, May 10th: Parkin and Wallington: 11:05 - 11:50

Davis and Seley: 12:55 - 1:40

We are very proud of this unique and enormous undertaking and hope you are able to attend. These two-homeroom, mini-assemblies will take place in the Engineering Tech. Lab (Room #80) at their regularly scheduled class time. Mr. Melton will join us with the first semester homerooms that are currently in Art.

BCS MEDIA CENTER NEWS

The Media Center is preparing for the end of the year, and it’s a big job for us this year – we have to pack up EVERYTHING in order to move EVERYTHING out of the room to get our new carpet this summer! We’re very excited, but we have a TON of packing to do, and it includes the books!

This means…

• Starting today, the checkout limit for students is 2 books at a time. If they have 2 or more out, they won’t be able to check out any more until some come back.

•The last day for checkouts will be Friday, May 18. After this day, we’ll be promoting our growing eBook collection!

•All books are due on Monday, May 21.

•Finally, we will again be holding the Least-Amount-of-Overdues Contest, with homerooms competing against each other by grade level. The homeroom in your grade level with the least amount of materials still out will be treated with a movie of your choice and treats in the Media Center on a day of your choosing during the last couple of weeks of school. The contest will end at the end of the school day on May 21…so encourage all of your students to get in their books before then!

•The Media Center will still be open for computer use past the books’ due date, but note that we will begin placing books in boxes the week after Memorial Day.
