7th Grade Social Studies

In Mr. Whitmer’s Social Studies class, we are maintaining a blog where we post our Current Events articles. At the beginning of the evolution of this blog, everyone in our class chose a personal topic that they would use to relate to news articles that we would find throughout the year. Once we find a news article that directly connects to our topic and to our blog, we post a reply to the story with our thoughts about it. There is a variety of different topics, themes and news articles from around the world that students choose for themselves that connect to a general theme of “How Does the World Work?”, ranging from technological standpoints, such as communication and transportation, to freedoms throughout the world, such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Students in Mr. Whitmer’s class post a variety of stories in a variety of different ways, such as podcasts, reviews of articles, and stories of different topics from countries all over the globe. Visiting the blog (http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/whitmer/ ) will not only increase your knowledge of how the world operates, but also of how students respond to this knowledge and how they connect it to topics, their lives, and the overall theme of “How Does the World Work”.
