WAG Post March 26-30, 2012

March 25, 2012
Dear BCS Families,
This past Friday I was joined by Mrs. Chinn and a small group of BCS teachers at Oakland Schools.  We were fortunate to participate in a workshop titled, The Highly Engaged Classroom.  Debra Pickering from the Marzano Institute (http://www.marzanoresearch.com/professional_development/pickering.aspx) facilitated the session and did a wonderful job of making us think, debate, and learn.  Three things occurred to me during the session.
  1. BCS teachers are doing exactly what the research points to in what makes a classroom engaging for students.
  2. Even though we are providing many opportunities for our students to be engaged in their learning, we must always reflect and improve.
  3. Using technology does not always mean engagement, it is what we are using the technology for that will ensure our students engagement.
This year many of our students have been involved in projects that cover the content in engaging ways.  What makes these purposeful projects engaging is the ability for our students to connect them to their interests.  A good example of this is what the Brown/Fitz science literacy class has done over the course of the last six months.  The students found a problem (the possibility of the extinction of the honey bee), connected it to their lives, and have started working on solving the problem through language arts, math, social studies, science and community outreach.  All of our 5/6 classes have taken the barriers of time and fixed mindsets and have thrown them out the door to create a time where students are learning by doing.  These projects include skyping with experts across the globe, writing to officials from local, state, and national organizations, and other engaging actions to solve a real problem, in the real world!
Friday proved to be a day where I could sit back and be proud of our staff and students here at BCS!  The highly engaged classroom does not happen without everyone, including parents, feeling connected to the learning community.  One discussion our table had was remembering a time in our school experience where we felt engaged and connected to the content being taught.  Share your experience on our parent wiki at
Have a G.E.E.K.ed week and enjoy spring break!

Messages to Students From Home
We are asking parent cooperation in minimizing the number of messages to be delivered to students during the school day.  We recognize, of course, that there are situations where you must get a message to your child.
IN THE EVENT YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY REQUIRING A MESSAGE TO YOUR CHILD, PLEASE DIAL 248-203-4426 for the school receptionist or 248-203-4474 for the parent volunteer at the reception desk.  Please be patient and do not leave a message in voice mail but rather call back until you reach a person.  We will deliver emergency messages to students if they are received before 2:45 pm.  We appreciate the message called in as soon as possible.
Please be sure your child is aware of unusual transportation or pickup arrangements BEFORE leaving for school in the morning.  A successful strategy used by parents is to write transportation arrangements or other important information in your child’s planner. Our very busy office staff thanks you!!
IMPORTANT  REMINDER
Please ensure that your student has and USES a lock on their GYM locker and that all valuables are secured there. Some students have lost valuable items. Locking them is the best protection for everyone

INSTRUMENTAL INFORMATION FOR 4TH GRADE FAMILIES FROM BPS INSTUMENTAL INSTRUCTORS
Dear Fourth Grade Parents,
In the fall of each school year, Birmingham Public Schools offers the opportunity for every fifth grader to participate in beginning band/orchestra class.  This is in addition, at the 5th grade level, to their vocal music instruction. We recommend that every 4th grader and a parent plan on joining us on Thursday, April 26th at 7:30pm in the Groves High School Auditorium for a concert presentation on instrumental music.  Please mark this date on your calendar.  This presentation will give students an opportunity to hear each instrument and gain a better understanding of the various groups of instruments. This performance will be presented by our high school students and the instrumental music staff.
In April and May a representative from Anderson Music Company will be coming to each elementary school to test and fit students towards being involved in the instrumental music program.  Each child will have the opportunity to try two - three instruments of their choosing from the strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion.    If, for some reason, you do not want your child tested, please send a letter to your child’s classroom teacher.  A letter will be sent home naming the instruments that your child tried and the one that was recommended for them with their input.
When students go on to middle school, they continue their music performance education in choir, band, or orchestra.   Being part of a performance group is such a rewarding and educational experience. Singing in a choral ensemble or playing in a band or orchestra are all amazing experiences. Performing builds self confidence, leadership skills and also helps to keep students focused and happy. We know that music students represent the top of the academic scale in our schools.  We also know music students average higher scores on standardized tests then their peers, go on to college and become the leaders in our society.
We look forward to seeing you on April 26th in the Groves auditorium and offering further details about the Birmingham Instrumental Music program.

WAG March19-23, 2012

March 18, 2012

Dear BCS Community,

WOW! What a Blast!! The iBlast has just ended and I have to again say I am amazed! The sun was out but many people decided to spend the better part of the day inside BCS having blast! Thank you to Karen Best and Ken Gilbert for once again heading a list of parents that work hard to make each year’s Blast better than the next. This will be Ken’s final year here at BCS. He will always be remembered as the guy that put the Blast on the map. BCS is lucky to have such a supportive and dedicated parent. Thank you Ken for your leadership. Karen will be working alongside new parents and showing them the ropes for future Blast fundraisers. We are fortunate to have Karen here to assist our new parents. Thank you Karen for your years of dedication and leadership.

The Blast includes an array of silent auction items ranging from sporting event tickets to cottage rentals to gift certificates. Most of our items are donated and we thank the families and businesses that help make our items quality prizes for our bidders. Our raffle drawing is always popular and is always full of amazing prizes. This year the following families won our raffle:

1st place (LCD TV, Xbox) The Stanton Family

2nd Place (ipad, ipod) The Iverson Family

3rd Place (Underwater camera) The Fisher Family

4th Place (Gateway net book) The Erne Family

Congratulations!!

I know I am speaking for all of the BCS staff when I say thank you to everyone involved in the 2012 Blast.

On a semi-related note, the rumor is true, there is a short list of BCS staff (including me) buzzing and/or dying their hair on the last day of school. BCS students raised over $3000.00 exceeding their goal of $2000.00 for the fight against hunger. We brought in over $1500.00 on Friday to push us over our goal (Thank you to one BCS family giving over $600.00). Thank you BCS families! It will be an inexpensive summer for some of us when it comes to haircuts!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Adam

Congratulations to the BCS Science Olympiad Team-

Details on the results will be sent via enews on Monday!

March 11, 2012

Dear BCS Families,

Driving back from Flushing today down I-75 was a much needed reminder spring is coming and the sun is starting to shine! We lost an hour of sleep but it was well worth it after seeing two Robins playing a game of tag this morning. Those of you deciding to bring out your motorcycles today, thank you! It is always a reminder warmer days are ahead.

Next weekend, iBlast will take place on Sunday and the excitement is in the air! If you have not already “liked” the BCS facebook page, check it out to see what iBlast items are available to bid on. The Blast is not just for BCS families. Please spread the word to family and friends as we are gearing up for the most important event of the year here at BCS.

I would like to thank our parents and staff for their efforts and positive attitude to make this year’s iBlast one of the best fundraisers in BCS history! We are excited to bring former families, present families, and incoming families together for one great cause!

See you on Sunday, March 18th from 3:30-7:30 p.m. here at BCS!

The BIG EVENT we've been waiting for all school year is finally almost here! BCS iBlast! 2012!

The Blast team has been working hard all year to make this the best and most successful Blast ever. We have some incredible Silent Auction items this year and 4 really cool Raffle items. We have the usual hallway games and inflatables for the kids to enjoy throughout the day.

Some of the Blast Packets went out late due to a shortage of Raffle Tickets. Everyone should have theirs by now. Because of this we are extending our deadline for Family Patrons to Monday, March 12th. The deadline for pre-ordering Chicken Dinners is Wednesday. Don't be late and miss out on these delicious meals. Get your order forms in NOW!

Last week your student should have brought home a bakery box to make it easier for you to donate baked goods for the Cake Walk. Cakes, Cookies, Brownies and Large Candy Bars are the kid's choice. Please contribute.

The Auction Booklet will be online again this year for your viewing, printing or downloading. There will also be a Check List of items you have an interest in to make it easier once you attend the Silent Auction. Please visit the Blast page under the PTSA tab at www.bcsonline.info for valuable information on BCS iBlast! 2012.

Help us make BCS iBlast! 2012 a success for our school and our children.

Please join us on Friday, March 16th, from 3:30 - 5:00pm for the Silent Auction Preview. Several items will have the "Buy Now" option.

BCS iBlast! 2012 is Sunday, March 18th, from 3:30 - 7:30pm. You won't want to miss this outstanding event at BCS.

See you there!

ATTENTION BCS FAMILIES! LAST WEEK FOR CLOSET CLEAN OUT DONATIONS!

Thanks so much to those of you who have already generously donated to the Closet Clean Out. If you are still looking to make some space in your closets we will be accepting donations through the end of the school day on Friday, March 16th.

You can bring your items to the “Closet Clean Out” bin placed just inside the office and we will collect and distribute them to the BCS Blast prize room. Anything we do not use will be delivered to a local children’s charity.

We are still looking for any unopened games, gadgets, toys or trinkets that you would like to get rid of for our BCS Blast prize room. Maybe you have a stash of never opened toys or "just in case" gifts or gift cards taking up way too much space in your closet. What a great way to do some house cleaning! Kids will be able to "purchase" these items in the prize room with the tickets they win at the BCS Blast. The 2012 Blast committee thanks you!
